In case you haven’t heard, the latest big spam attack has sent out around 500 million emails advising people to invest in a certain stock, Prime Time Holdings inc. The spammers had bought shares in this company prior to the spam-out and their plan is to wait until the share price goes up due to spammed recipients following the spammers advice by purchasing that stock. The spammers will then sell their shares and make money with the share price having increased.
Within the first week of the spam campaign, Prime Time Holdings stock price rose several times, sometimes as much as 30%. This exercise in redistribution of wealth should give everyone pause to consider what sort of spam-blocking or spam protection system they have through their email hosting service. If you have no such system, or still have only a simple system set up some time back, before the more sophisticated and determined spamming began, have a rethink.
Also have a rethink if despite your anti-spamming system you still access and open some of the more “attractive” of your spam emails and take them seriously. In either case, you might consider it worth your time to grab our free ebook on how to protect yourself from spam, viruses and hackers – written by an industry expert.
